BIHS students love reading! And they don't stop just because summer is here. The BIHS English teachers have complied lists of recommended summer reading for their classes, in some case adding movies or other alternative media choices as well. Ideas from these books will be referred to during next year's classes; incoming juniors are also asked to keep a reader's journal of all books read over the summer. As you read, keep in mind these questions: How do we tell stories? Why do we tell stories? How are we to read and interpret the stories our cultures and other cultures produce?
Reading lists:
- Incoming freshmen (Class of 2013)
- Incoming sophomores (Class of 2012)
- Incoming juniors (Class of 2011)
- Incoming seniors (Class of 2010)
New web tool for managing CAS hours
BIHS has updated to a new website to support the Creativity, Action, Service hours. The new website is berkeley.managecas.com and will provide an organized and efficient place for students to get approval for activities, log and track their hours. A list of CAS opportunities, plus the CAS handbook, and logging sheets are all posted on the Manage CAS website for easy use. They will also be posted on this website for parents to view, starting with the CAS resource guide.
All sophomores and juniors have been entered into the new website and spent a class period becoming familiar with the site, and entering their information. Juniors transferred the information from the old website to the new website during class.
Students need pre-approval for all of their CAS activities. IB Coordinator Ashley Milton will be checking the website to give approval on June 15th, July 15th, and August 1st. Students with upcoming summer activities are encouraged to log their information before that time.
Envoys from BIHS meet with former U.S. diplomat
Four BIHS juniors (Kyla Mathis-Angress, Partow Imani, Noah Teller, and Rachel Harrington-Abrams) accompanied Global Studies teacher Miranda Thorman to the World Affairs Council recently to hear Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad speak. Khalizad is the former U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, Iraq, and the United Nations. The BIHS delegation participated in a 30-minute Q&A session with the ambassador with about 10 other students and teachers, and then stayed for the public program.
