Creativity, Action, Service (IBCAS)

The Extended Essay

Theory of Knowledge

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

Some of the aims of the course include:

  • develop a fascination with the richness of knowledge.
  • encourage students to reflect on their experiences as learners.
  • encourage an interest in the diversity of ways of thinking.

CAS hours

Creativity, action, service (CAS) is at the heart of the BIHS Program. It is one of the three essential elements in every student’s experience. It involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies throughout the junior and senior years. The three strands of CAS, which are often interwoven with particular activities, are characterized as follows.

Creativity – arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking, with a focus of taking on new roles.

Action – physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle with a focus of taking on new roles.

Service – an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student and builds meaningful links within the community.

BIHS has set up benchmarks to keep students on track to meet this requirement:

  • 75 hours by winter of Junior Year
  • 100 hours by spring of Junior Year
  • 125 hours by the end of summer before Senior Year
  • 150 hours completed by December of the Senior Year

Getting credit for hours

We are using a website to track all hours and activities (www.caslog.com) Student will each have their own log in and password.

Students will enter activities, information, hours, categories, and reflections on-line.

Students must have each activity pre-approved, verified after completing, and write a reflection.

CAS mentors (amazing parent volunteers) will be assigned to each of the history classes and will have access to your hours.

University IB policy (including minimum points score required)

Students completing the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma with a score of 30 or above will receive 30 quarter units (20 semester units) total toward their UC undergraduate degree.

Students completing only IB certificates will be awarded 8 quarter units (5.3 semester units) for each IB Higher Level examination passed with a score of 5 or above. The University does not grant credit for certificates in Standard Level examinations.

Higher Level examinations may be used by UC campuses to satisfy local general education or other major requirements. Students are advised to check with the individual UC campus to determine how general education and/or major requirements may be granted.

You don’t have to navigate these programs alone...
