Help is always needed to maintain the quality of education at BIHS. Whether you can stage an event, chaperone a field trip, create a poster or stuff an envelope, there's a volunteer position waiting for you. For more information about volunteer opportunities, email volunteer@berkeleyihs.org.
Parent Action Group
The Berkeley International High School Parent Action Group (PAG) is a parent volunteer organization that helps sustain the high quality of the four-year BIHS program by providing both financial and volunteer resources to support students, teachers, and staff. To accomplish this, the BIHS PAG relies on fund-raising and parent volunteers. Parent participation, whether on an occasional or on-going basis, is welcome and is crucial to the success of the Berkeley International High School program.
Parent volunteer positions
PAG Coordinators
(Candy Meyers and Sandi Hunt)
- Moderates Monthly Meetings
- Solicits Input and Plans Agendas
- Coordinates with BIHS lead teachers and with all PAG Committee Leads
- Advisory Council Rep (holds one seat) and reports on meeting
- Can post E-Tree Announcements
Teacher Support Coordinator
(Susan Helmrich, Maureen Katz, Toni Garrett)
- Coordinates Teacher Liaisons
- Solicits volunteers to serve as Teacher liaisons
- Coordinates meetings with Teacher Liaisons on a periodic basis to calendar speakers, schedule class-wide events and other joint efforts

- Identifies one speaker lead for each grade
- Identifies one field trip lead for each grade
- Solicits additional parent volunteers for events or field trips
- Works with teacher to identify and fulfill needs
Field Trip Coordinator (see description below)
(Donna Jaffe and Devra Laner; need two assistants, one for each grade level)
- Coordinates with Teachers
- May include making arrangements for field trips, including reservations for venues, transportation, parent assistance, etc
Creativity Action Service (IB CAS) Coordinators

- Organize, Recruit and Lead Classroom CAS Mentors
- Coordinate CAS Fair
CAS Mentors (see description below)
(about 12 to 15 needed)
- Work with students to document CAS hours
- Be available at least twice a month on campus to work with students
- Assist students in identifying and filling gaps to ensure successful completion of CAS requirements
Event Planning

- Recruiting, organizing potlucks, events, picnic, info nights, IB Field Day, IBCAS Fair
- Solicits volunteers, often 2-3 per event
Travel Opportunities Coordinator for summer, spring or winter break
(Susan Jacobs)
- Works with students, teachers and PAG to identify interest in travel opportunities
- Researches and makes available information on individual student opportunities (e.g., study abroad programs)
- Researches group travel opportunities
- Leads committee to make group travel arrangements, including funding plan to facilitate group travel 2-3 positions needed
Volunteer Coordinator

- Maintain record of volunteers, organize information for other coordinators
- Request volunteers for specific events & activities
Comprehensive Community Outreach Liaison
(Lynn Signorelli, 3 additional needed)
- Works to ensure active participation by previously underrepresented parents or parents who miss meetings but wish to volunteer
- Provides outreach to specific communities, e.g., Latino families, African American families
Shared Governance Council Representative

- Attend Shared Governance Meetings one per month
- Identify issues that may affect BIHS and report at PAG meetings

Fundraising Coordinator

CAS mentors
- CAS Mentors are needed to advise, assist and inspire students in completing their 150 Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) hours by Senior year.
- Each Mentor will be assigned to one Junior class and will work throughout the year with the students in that class to identify CAS opportunities tailored to individual students, monitor CAS hours and activities to determine whether they meet CAS requirements, and ensure that all necessary paperwork and/or on-line logging has been completed before and after each CAS activity.
- Mentors will meet with students in the class who need assistance on a weekly or biweekly basis after school and will also attend periodic meetings with other CAS program volunteers and staff and will participate in a CAS Fair to be held in the fall.
